We have finished 16 weeks of chemo treatments and Barb has shown considerable improvement. The cracked rib has healed. The tumors have shrunk. The bones appear to be healing. The doctor said that there is really no way to know if the cancer is gone, but we have to assume that it is still there. Waiting.
We will probably need to have chemo treatments again. The doctor said it could be 3 months or 30 months down the road. That's not real encouraging, but you can be sure that Barb will continue to be a fighter. I am just part of the support team.
For now we are cheering the fact that for the first time since the 1st of February, we don't have a doctor's appointment scheduled for next week. We will continue with Herceptin and Zometa treatments, but even they are being staggered a bit.
I'm sure that I have failed to give our doctors and nurses their due, but we are ever so grateful for the care and concern they have given us. The nurses in particular have tried to impress upon us that with today's medicine cancer is much like diabetes - it is an illness that must be maintained and controlled. It is something that people can live with.
I'm counting on it.
